Eurometaux’s Proposals for the Raw Materials Initiative, jointly prepared with Öko-Institut e.V. now online

In June Eurometaux and Öko-Institut e.V. launched the jointly prepared report addressing the industrial proposals to the Raw Materials Initiative of the European Commission .

The Raw Material Initiative of the European Commission was launched in 2008 and during the course of the year 2010 a progress report will be published.

Eurometaux, the EU Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Association, commissioned Öko-Institut e.V., an independent research and consultancy organisation for sustainable development, to elaborate jointly with Eurometaux’s members a document supporting the Raw Material Initiative and providing concrete proposals whereby to improve and, whenever possible, guarantee, access to raw materials for EU industry. In total 10 proposals have been drafted and agreed within the industry as follows:

 

1. Improved enforcement of the waste shipment regulation to avoid illegal shipment of waste

2. Customs identification of second-hand goods

3. End -of Waste Concept

4. Certification of pre-processors, refiners and recyclers of waste and secondary raw materials

5. Shipping of complex materials to BAT-recycling plants in Europe: “Best of two worlds” approach

6. Improve collection schemes, their management, and access to the materials  collected and to recycling

7. Eco  Leasing – A product of service

8. Data on recycling

9. Research  on recyclability

10. Economic viability of recycling
